‘We just hope the journey ahead can be a little smoother for her’
Going into labour with your first baby is, for most new mums, an exciting time – a memory to cherish. Although painful, there’s a rush of adrenaline, the thrill of anticipation and the joy of meeting your newborn a few hours later.
But for Napier couple Antonia O’Connor and her husband Dale, those first pangs of labour were tarnished with fear, horror and heartbreak.
Antonia, 31, recalls, “I remember turning to Dale and saying, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I’d done everything I could to try to prevent labour, but I couldn’t change what my body was doing. It was out of our hands.”
