When considering which soundbar from within a series would best suit our needs, we usually adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations for screen-size matching. After all, if you’ve got a decent-sized TV, you want the imaging of the sound to have the same breadth as the visuals.

However, LG’s SP8YA proves that just because a soundbar is compact it doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on sonic scope.

The LG SP8YA costs £600 and brings all of the top tier features and format support of the massive, flagship SP11RA (£1500) down to a bar LG suggests is suitable for a 49-inch screen. It includes the same model of wireless sub as its bigger siblings (the SPP8-W), and the system can be enhanced by adding the SPK8 2.0 surround kit for around £130, meaning you can build a 5.1.2 system for a total outlay of £730, although here we’re reviewing it as a simple bar and subwoofer package.
