Wedded to an idea

It was 2013 when Hagai Levi was first approached about remaking Scenes from a Marriage, the groundbreaking 1973 television series by the doyen of Swedish cinema, Ingmar Bergman.

The award-winning creator of The Affair, Levi had been visiting Sweden to promote In Treatment, the US adaptation of his Israeli series BeTipul, which starred Gabriel Byrne as a psychotherapist suffering his own midlife crisis as he dealt with a roster of patients.

While there, Levi spoke about the impact had had on him as a young man. A few weeks later,and its focus on two characters in each episode. He thought Levi might be the right guy to revive .
