Sense and sentience

IN 1822, the UK parliament passed the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act, promoted by Irish fox-hunting MP ‘Humanity Dick’ Martin, which is the first recorded example of animal-welfare legislation anywhere in the world. In the 200 years that have followed, Britain has continued to lead the world on the welfare of animals and Parliament has passed reams of animal-welfare legislation that protects and therefore recognises the sentience of vertebrate animals and some invertebrates.
