Back in the 1990s, we got it wrong. By “we” I mean golf and by “got it wrong” I mean that, in response to a report saying we needed many more courses to satisfy future demand, we created too many ‘championship’ tests rather than shorter, more manageable layouts. That this report ultimately proved a little wide of the mark is a topic for another day. My sole aim here is to extol the virtues of some of our shorter 18-hole courses that can still test you, but where the first thing you wear out is something other than a fairway wood headcover.
