West must learn from the debacle in Afghanistan

The article by Nesrine Malik (Opinion, 27 August) alludes to the issue of “foreign policy” without mentioning it by name.

Some will be wondering whether much has been learned by “the west” from either cosying up to certain leaders or by way of actual physical interventions. The US tried it with the shah in Iran and failed, and now we have the debacle of Afghanistan.
