turned out to be a poor year for breeding waders here in Galloway. A very dry spring parched the hill and the weather remained scorchingly hot until the middle of July. Curlew failed and snipe were driven away by a lack of mud and water. It made for a gloomy spectacle and this is now the latest in a sequence of bad summers for wading birds in south-west Scotland.
