Why Windsor?
Windsor has come to be defined by its castle, and the pageantry and royals that are associated with it – and justifiably so. Windsor Castle has stood on the same site, high on a hilltop overlooking the town, for 900 years and been home to an incredible 39 monarchs. It is often proclaimed the current Queen’s favourite official residence, and George V even renamed the royal family after it – transforming the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more anglicised House of Windsor – in 1917. It is now the oldest royal residence in continuous use and the largest inhabited castle in the world.
