Testing the new system

MAY I emphasise that here I am discussing the EXPORT not import of birds; i.e. selling your birds to a fancier in the EU or Northern Ireland. Better brains than mine have been looking at these issues. My purpose in writing is to inform fanciers of the costs and process as reported to me by my vet and after an hour-long call with the APHA vet who inspects premises.

I reasonably assume that those of us who were registered under the Balai directive to be able to take birds to European shows or to sell birds within the EU (both now classified as “exporting”) have had letters from DEFRA/APHA to explain the new legislative regime now that the UK is no longer a member of the EU.

There is a significant difference between Balai “registration” and Balai “approval”. The difference is
