Made eight years after the end of World War Two, Hideo Sekigawa’s shows the horrific effects of the world’s first use of the atom bomb with an immediacy afforded by the film’s proximity to the events it depicts. Featuring 90,000 extras (most of whom are citizens of the city, some survivors), a significant budget (provided by the Japan Teachers Union, who screened the film in schools and community centres), several star-actors and a dramatic score from composer Akira Ifukube, the film tells the story of the bomb with an epic scale and scope.
