If Martin Scorsese movies can be seen as vast, colourful, pungent flowers, then the short, an accomplished comic doodle made during his time at New York University about a man who becomes fixated with a photograph on his wall which remains the only constant in his otherwise tumultuous life. What comes across here is that Scorsese has always been a master organiser of visual articulation, and was clearly able to think in long, meandering montages from his earliest days behind the viewfinder. from 1964 is a more expansive, though similarly hectic jaunt through the criminal life of the eponymous Murray (Ira Rubin) and his conniving accomplice Joe (Sam De Fazio), which seems to fit 100 different set-ups into its curt 15-minute runtime. His avid cinephilia is on clear display, most notably his love of Federico Fellini
