Wend your mind back to Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons to recall that it contains what might be the earliest recorded example of a mic drop. It occurs right at the end of the film when a boom arcs away from the camera before disappearing behind a screen of bright studio lights – a fitting sign-off to one of the all-time great end credits sequences.
