BOTANIC MECHANICS

MEADOW BOX

It’s remarkable how impactful an arrangement in a small trough can be. The mechanics can support a huge number of stems, and because the trough is weighted, the design will be stable even if it’s large and sprawling.

I used soft dusky pinks and whites with contrasting dark flowering foliage to give depth, as well as an elegant, abundant feel. Scent is so important to me and here I’ve used roses from Wales and mint from Surrey. Your flowers will look great in photos, but in person, in that moment, there’s something special about the scent. Proust talked about the intrinsic link between scent and memory after eating a madeleine: ‘An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses, something isolated, detached, with no suggestion of its origin.’ I want to elicit these feelings of delight with flowers.
