It took just six months in 1745 for Charles Edward Stuart to build a rising aimed at restoring his line to the British throne. Landing in Scotland with just a dozen men, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ assembled an army that seized the city of Edinburgh, crushed government forces in battle, and, with a force of around 5,000 men, marched into England as far as Derby.
