August 4, 1821, was the date of the very first issue of The Saturday Evening Post. To share our pride in our publication’s great history, we’ve been celebrating our milestone 200th anniversary all year. This issue showcases the Post’s outstanding reporting of some of the most pivotal moments in American history as documented by top journalists of the day.

Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers’ president, directed his scouts to search for talented Black ballplayers that the scouts believed were for a new Negro League within the Dodgers franchise. Jackie Robinson himself was shocked to learn Rickey’s true intent — and in 1946, of course, he became the first Black major league ballplayer.
