On the night of September 28, 1781, General George Washington ordered his army to sleep with their weapons. Earlier that day, his men had arrived within a mile of Yorktown, Virginia. The British artillery and cavalry had immediately fired on them. The next day, the American and French armies began preparing for the battle that would end the Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
The British army commanded by General Charles, Lord Cornwallis, was trapped in Yorktown. The British were outnumbered more than two to one. But Cornwallis had ordered Yorktown protected by earthworks.
