Unfortunately Roderick Ramage’s solution does not solve the problem [Platform, August 23].
About 15 years ago I let a small cottage at £30 per week paid by social security. The tenant provided a reference then, as I found out later, took a job that paid £300 a week but continued to claim despite the minimal rent. When social security belatedly learned about his job, I was required to pay back £600, covering 20 weeks’ rent.
