It is a golden summer’s morning in the Borders. The fragrant smell of freshly cut timber hangs in the air. Birds flit among the branches of the ancient beech trees that surround the Marchmont Workshop where Sam Cooper and Richard Platt, sleeves rolled up, are contemplating the day ahead. Their order book is full until next Christmas, but enquiries are still coming in for their meticulously crafted chairs. Their furniture hits the sweet spot of all that is desirable in 2021: it is handmade, natural, authentic and sustainable, at the same time as being elegant, timeless and beautiful.
