hen he moved to Hawai‘i at age 19, photographer Brendan George Ko was immediately captivated by the islands’ beauty and overlooked past. Now 35, he’s spent much of the past 16 years documenting the state’s natural spaces, including (p. 82). “Over the years, my work has been about collecting stories that are specific to landscapes,” he says. “I find the land is inseparable from history.” Ko is also a member of—and documentarian for—Maui’s traditional voyaging community, the subject of his new book, (Conveyor Studio, 2021). He wrote the book to honor Māori anthropologist, physician, and politician Te Rangi Hīroa. “My book is a letter to him and sharing the progress that has happened,” Ko says.
