The legend goes that in the 14th century the Thane of Cawdor followed instructions he received in a dream to load a donkey with gold and let it wander the local vicinity. Wherever it laid down that night would be the site of the new castle. The donkey chose a humble holly tree to sleep under. Whatever the truth of the story, a petrified holly tree stands proud in the base of the castle, and carbon dating places it around 1397.
