Hearing it is easier than seeing the industrious goldcrest. Our tiniest bird, smaller than a wren and weighing phrases. The overall appearance suggests a miniature, well-used tennis ball: buff and olive green, a beak that probes leaves and twigs for insect morsels. Watch out for the startling golden crest, finely margined with black, brushed in a fiery blaze atop the bird's little head.
