Remembering the Often-Forgotten Susan B. Anthony Dollars

There have not been too many United States coins that were maligned as much when they first came out as the Susan B. Anthony dollar. Perhaps the 20-cent pieces were greeted with the same volume of complaints back in their day. Or perhaps the trickle of $3 gold pieces, if anyone ever saw them during the times they were being minted. But for modern United States pieces, the Susan B’s tend to get more scorn than just about any other series.

The complaints include: the design isn’t attractive. The size makes it easy to confuse with the quarter. There is no need for them as long as we continue printing $1 bills.) claims, “it failed to gain widespread public acceptance.”
