We’ve all been there, weighing-up whether or not it’s worth forking out hundreds of pounds on repairs to get another year’s motoring out of the car on the driveway. It’s especially true when you’ve done a lot of work on a vehicle and it’s a known quantity.

Our Zafira A, 1.9-litre turbodiesel had just failed its MOT. Amongst the long list of items on the failure notification was severe corrosion on the subframe. I priced-up a second-hand subframe and checked with the local garage how much it would cost to fit it. The car was also due for a service and I was looking at a total bill in the region of £600. Given the car was 17-years-old with 130,000 miles on the clock, I had to decide if it was time to cut my losses and replace the Zafira.
