THE MULTIPLE FRUIT

A delicious tropical fruit from South America, the pineapple is the most economically significant plant of the bromeliad family.

When this herbaceous perennial blooms with up to 200 flowers per plant, the flowers join together to create the “multiple fruit” we call the pineapple.

This fruit is organised into two interlocking spirals: eight in one direction and 13 in the other, a perfect example of Fibonacci numbers.

Interestingly, the English word “pineapple” was first recorded
