In 1913 the two biggest names in the golfing world were Brits Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Outside of Massachusetts, Francis Ouimet was a complete unknown.
Vardon had already won a U.S. Open and five Open Championships, while Ray was a prolific winner and an Open Champion. Ouimet’s only victory before the 1913 U.S. Open was the Massachusetts Amateur.
