Jan Stenerud was one of the first signers at the 41st annual National Sports Collectors Convention, appearing July 28 at the VIP Party along with Wally Joyner and Cecil Fielder.
But Stenerud had to battle Chicago’s relentless traffic and a young security guard at the venue who had no clue the person he would not let in was, in fact, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Stenerud, 78, played in the NFL from 1967-1985, primarily for Kansas City, and later for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. He was a four-time Pro Bowl kicker and Super Bowl champion when his Chiefs defeated the Vikings after the 1969 season. Stenerud is a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and the 100th All-Time Team. His No. 3 has been retired by the Chiefs.
