Major change needed to stop pentathlon problems

SCENES during the modern pentathlon at the Tokyo Olympics must never be allowed to happen again, it has been widely stated, as the world governing body has pledged to make changes.
H&H reported that Germany’s Annika Schleu was in tears as her ride Saint Boy napped, then refused to jump. Her reaction and whip use, and her coach’s punching of the horse, sparked outrage (news, 12 August).
More than 132,000 people have signed a petition for the riding to be lost from the sport.
