THE ROYAL FAMILY

Royal patronage has been granted at a surprising number of clubs all over the world, and its presence implies a status of prestige and class that is for the most part well deserved. There are, of course, very strong royal links with many sports and activities, royal theatres and towns and royal connections with many charitable organisations. The earliest patronage is believed to be that of George II with the Society of Antiquaries, formalised in 1751.

With regard to the sport we love, the first in a long line of golf organisations to be awarded this title was what is now officially known as the Royal Perth Golfing Society and County and City Club. This was back in 1833, just a year before it was bestowed on the Royal and Ancient Golf Club
