After ordering our lunch at the Ardmore Airport cafe, I ask Steve if this is an appropriate venue. Was it here that he was first introduced to motor racing? “You’re absolutely right — in fact it was just a bit further along from here where I watched with my dad.”
On discovering it was at the 1957 Grand Prix (GP) that the just-turned-seven-year-old received his introduction to the sport that would consume his life, I say, “Ah, the year Ron Roycroft led for the first 10 or so laps.” To which Steve responds, “My dad was part of Ron’s pit crew.”
