It’s a familiar trope in high-school movies: the new girl comes up against the catty group of “popular kids” as she struggles to find her place in an unwelcome environment., the latest in a plethora of films about ageing, the twist is that the new girl on this block is senior citizen Helen Wilson (Ellen Burstyn), a fiercely independent widow who moves reluctantly into a retirement village while her home is being repaired. Confronted by the strong will and sharp tongue of Janet and her sycophantic clique of Queen Bees – “The ‘B’ stands for bitch,” warns one resident – Helen has to grapple with unexpected new friendships and the possibility of late-life love.
