TUCKED away in a quiet corner of north-west France, a British girl is doing something quite extraordinary. Ex-advanced event rider Louisa Carberry has been training jumpers for just seven years and she is already responsible for one of the best French horses in living memory.
This summer, Docteur De Ballon added a second Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris in Auteuil to an illustrious CV that also includes the Prix de la Haye Jousselin. This is equivalent to a Gold Cup double and a King George. That’s verging on Kauto Star status – who also started his career in the same village of Senonnes, a mini French Lambourn.
“The Grand Steeple is the pinnacle of French steeplechasing,” says Louisa. “It’s what absolutely every trainer, jockey, owner and breeder wants to win.”
The word “journey” is overused in sport, and Louisa’s path to the top is less of a journey, more rocket-launch straight into the cosmos.
