British Antarctic Territory 1963 Definitives

The British Antarctic Territory (BAT) was formed on the 3 March 1962 from what had been the Falkland Islands Dependencies. Technically, it includes all islands and territories between the 20th degree west longitude and the 80th degree of west longitude, situated south of the 60th parallel of south latitude. This includes the South Shetland Islands, South Orkney Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, together with a slice of the continent extending to the South Pole.

Britain’s claim on the territory dates back to 1908, but later on in the 20th century, the ‘scramble for Antarctica’ echoed the 19th century scramble for Africa, with seven nations laying claim to various chunks.
