THE SECRETS TO TAMING THE CHALLENGE OF KNOCKHILL IN A TOURING CAR
Within the British Touring Car Championship paddock, the trip to Knockhill in Fife is often called, with a tongue firmly in the cheek, the series’ overseas round. It isn’t, of course, but it certainly provides something different within the 10-event schedule.
The BTCC first went north of the border in 1992 and it has been back for most years since. The compact nature of the track – which sits on a hillside in Scotland and stretches to just 1.27 miles – means that it always delivers action on the Tarmac and it creates a unique challenge for the drivers.
The track layout has remained unchanged since those initial two races in 1992, which were won by Jeff Allam (Vauxhall) and Tim Harvey (BMW).
Three-time British Touring Car Championship title winner Gordon Shedden has returned to the series this year with Team Dynamics in a Honda Civic. Knockhill is home turf for him as he works at the venue as its commercial director. He knows the appeal of balancing a tin-top on the edge around the undulations and demands of the track.
Shedden explains: “Knockhill is exciting because there isn’t a second where you can relax around the whole track.
