GUSTAVE MOREAU’S sorties into imagination were by turns overtly exotic, as in the late work , replete with over-wrought detail; darkly erotic, such as of 1875–6; and, occasionally, brightened by apparently whimsical flashes of sunshine. All possess what Jacob, Lord Rothschild, in his foreword to the catalogue of the current exhibition, describes as ‘sensual mysticism’.
