Freezing, intermittent rain lashed the back of my hands as it swept through the doorless side of the Polaris. Next to me, Mike Appleby sat at the wheel, his moderated rifle beside him. On the back was underkeeper James Rock, perched in a wooden cage that served both as a safety device to prevent falling and a convenient rest for the rifle.
