NATIONAL TREASURE

Wilton House near Salisbury is the stateliest of stately homes, one of a handful of A-list English country houses. Originally an abbey, dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539, it was granted to William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke in 1544 and has remained the seat of the Earls of Pembroke ever since. Its interiors feature a series of state rooms, designed by Inigo Jones to receive King Charles I, which are the finest surviving examples of Stuart palace splendour.
