Pilgrimages have been popular since Medieval times, with devoted Christians following routes to shrines, abbeys, cathedrals, and temples. Many walked thousands of miles to visit the Vatican City in Rome, or Jerusalem.
It was considered an act of piety to go on a pilgrimage, a way of demonstrating your devotion to God – but that wasn’t the only reason people undertook them. For many, it was an opportunity to get out and see the world – some of those Mediaeval pilgrims were also the world’s first tourists!
