Melbourne City claim first A-League title

Seven years ago, the City Football Group acquired Melbourne Heart as part of its burgeoning global portfolio of clubs. A-League watchers anticipated an upsurge in the then-struggling Heart, and an immediate injection of funding that would lift the competition as a whole.

Safe to say what followed was more of a slow build than a quick fix. Despite the renamed Melbourne City dabbling in high-profile signings such as David Villa and Tim Cahill, and the construction of a new $20 million training complex in the suburb of Bundoora, success proved elusive.
