A deal to spend $1trn on roads, bridges and airports was within “touching distance” this week, says David Charter in The Times. Moderate Democrats and Republicans in the Senate had thrashed out a 2,702-page text for the infrastructure bill after weeks of negotiations. It was then up to Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (pictured) to steer the legislation through the upper chamber before it adjourned for the summer at the end of the week. The bill must also pass in the House of Representatives, where the Democrats have a slim majority. Democrats are planning to “load up” an additional $3.5trn of spending on childcare, education, climate and healthcare in a separate “human infrastructure” package that will not rely on Republican votes, because it is being framed as a budget bill and thus subject to different rules.
