I THOUGHT I would drop you a line on the picture of F. Jefferson whose picture appeared with a hawfinch perching on his fingers in your “From the Archives” item in the May 26 Cage & Aviary Birds. At the end of the paragraph you ask for comments.
While I never knew F. Jefferson, I thought I should come to his defence after the comment that he looked a supercilious gent. As an adjective, the word “supercilious” means “disdainful”, “haughty” or “with a contemptuous facial expression”.
