he bountiful, showy hydrangea is a feast for the eyes. Loved for meaning water, and for vessel – and is also a clue to its thirsty nature. Flowers can be white, blue, purple, pink or red, and amazingly some hydrangeas can change colour depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. Neutral soils produce pale cream blooms, acidic soils result in blue flowers and alkaline soils will give you pretty pink or purple petals. Plant in autumn or spring in a partially shaded spot and keep the soil moist – note its pH level and pick a cultivar with a hue to match.
