Lawns can be hugely uninspiring. It can actually involve less time and hassle maintaining a mixed border than a pristine lawn. The initial work of lifting a lawn might be hard, but one of the joys of planting up a previously grassed area is that the bees move in immediately, and you know you’re providing food for pollinators, birds and other wildlife.
Swapping grass for colourful borders is something I’m increasingly doing as part of my garden design work. Front gardens in particular, such as the one pictured here, can be transformed into wildlife-rich places to hang out in.
