There’s been much talk this year about the world entering a ‘new roaring twenties’ – a rerun of the decade that left the shadow of World War I, characterised by exuberant culture and optimism. It wasn’t all as radical as jazz, flapper dresses and art deco, though: gardening was very much a booming pastime of the era. We know gardening can be a soothing balm in times of uncertainty: growing plants can give us respite from all that’s out of our control and offer a sense of calm in the midst of a crisis. In that sense, maybe after its tumultuous start, the 2020s will carry echoes from a century earlier.
