Magical guitar solos

News of the best in the entertainment world this month

I grew up in the Sixties and Seventies – the era of the guitar hero – making this task of picking one solo out really tough.

The raw blues and rippling, screaming notes of Rory Gallagher’s virtuoso work on Sugar Mama for the trio Taste, the pure tones of Free’s heroin-doomed lead guitarist Paul Kossoff on Alright Now or Mark Knopfler’s unique melodic playing especially the epic solo on the live version of Sultans of Swing are close contenders for me.

But as a favourite I have to go for the acoustic guitar of Luther Perkins, which transforms from a good country song into a classic.
