PERSISTENCE ON THE PINHOTI TRAIL

Sitting in a worn camp chair in the early morning light of northern Georgia, Coree Woltering looked like he was sleeping with his eyes open. His 50-yard stare would have anyone believing he’d witnessed a brutal murder on the trail. In reality, he was experiencing one of the intense lows that comes with extreme ultrarunning efforts. There was a very still tension in the air, an understanding among his crew that Woltering was teetering on the edge of a very fine line. Would he press on to fight for the Pinhoti Trail fastest known time (FKT), or would he succumb to the need for sleep?

Spend any amount of time following Woltering’s Instagram account (@coreewoltering) and you’ll quickly get a sense that he is keenly adept at leaping into massive endurance running challenges with limited planning. His feed is full of wine
