Thank heavens for the freedom that having a motorhome gives us! We were in need of fresh mountain air and good walking – and aimed to use aires and to avoid campsites as much as possible.
Dropping through Belgium (and filling up with LPG) and Luxembourg (for diesel) we entered Switzerland from France on a quiet road, heading for Neuchâtel. It felt great to be away.
Finding the official aire in Neuchâtel to be roadside (and rather overpriced at €20/£17.86 per night), we were relieved to spot a number of ‘vans in a free car park next to the gorgeous lake and tucked in with them. With the temperature in the 30s, we enjoyed paddleboarding and swimming in the surprisingly warm water.
Neuchâtel combines its scenic lakeside setting with ‘olde-worlde’ charm. The castle dominates the top of the town and characterful buildings tumble down through steep streets and squares to the harbour. Whilst still a fair number of miles from the biggest mountains in the Oberland, these peaks are clearly visible across the lake.
Arriving back at the ‘van I found a deflated tyre and, disappointingly, my Ducato-supplied pump died, having just struggled to inflate the tyre up to a drivable pressure. Several garages later we discovered it wasn’t a tyre problem at all and
