How to compose a successful flower painting

I love flowers. I grow them for colour, cutting and for wildlife or fragrance; others I grow for the joy of painting them. Eager to catch both sun and flowers before they fade, I often take photographs of flowers outdoors, using a large sheet of white card as a table covering or light reflector. Outdoor photography offers me more opportunity than indoors, where catching the light just right needs more precise timing. Whether a vase full of flowers or a single stem, they inspire me to paint.

My favourite medium for painting flowers is watercolour, as it can be used bold and bright, or extremely delicately. Transparent colours can be overlaid to mix
