THE PROTAGONISTS

One of Porsche’s most successful technical concepts is the mid-mounted engine, which has been put to good use in many production and race cars. More than fifty years ago, this layout was adopted for the Targa-topped 914. Earlier, in the 1950s, it was selected for the 550 Spyder and 718 RSK motorsport machines, and, contrary to popular belief, 356 No. 1, the car signaling the birth of Porsche as a car maker, featured the mid-engine layout in 1948.
