n the aftermath of the murder of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March 44 BC, his young heir swore to hunt down each and every assassin and bring them to justice. Before the first battle at Philippi in Greece in 42 BC, Octavian (who inherited the name C. Julius Caesar) promised to build a temple to the war god Mars if he would give him victory.
