How have you been getting on with the colouring pencils since last month? I hope you enjoyed the last article where we practised the burnishing technique. For this second and final part in the series, we will be studying another creature, the red admiral butterfly, based on my gouache illustration (right). I originally painted last month’s image and this butterfly as part of a diptych so hopefully you will end up with two beautiful artworks, the bee and the butterfly, that can be framed alongside each other.

I will be using St Cuthbert’s Botanical Smooth 300gsm paper and, as with the bee drawing, I suggest you do not tape the paper to a drawing board. This will allow you to spin it around so that you can adapt the direction of your
